Saint Ignatius Loyola (1491–1556) was the founder of the Jesuit order. He was canonised as a saint in 1622 – which led to the production of numerous images for Jesuit institutions around the world. This sculpture has both Asian and European features, and speaks to vibrant cultural exchanges that flourished centuries ago.
