Smoke filled the sky above the swanky beach town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, as shops and cars were set ablaze by cartel members after the government killed a major drug kingpin Sunday, leaving tourists and residents cowering in fear.

The leader of a drug cartel was killed in a Mexican military operation over the weekend.

In a press release, the Mexican government confirmed military forces killed Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the leader of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
